The 2015 Chapters Regional Conference (CRC) will be July 23-25 in Memphis, the home of FedEx, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Grizzlies, and the King of Rock and Roll (he’s not really dead, by the way). We have a great event planned….and we’ll get some ASHRAE work done, too.
We’ll be staying at the newly renovated Sheraton Downtown; it’s connected to our Convention Center, a short trolley ride from Beale Street, and they’re charging us a really good rate. The room rate is $130 per day, plus $18 per day valet parking. The room block is open (it closes 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015) so go ahead and register for the hotel at:
https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=1412309721&key=4DA79C1
We’ve got some great events planned (schedule link here):
Golf on Wednesday afternoon at a good local course. If you’re interested, contact Shawn Bodkin at stbodkin@trane.com (901-345-6000).
The Welcome Party will be at the Smithsonian-affiliated Rock and Soul Museum on Beale Street. We’ll then eat at Blues City Café on Beale Street.
The Friday Banquet will start with a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum, then we’ll walk across the parking lot for a feast at Central BBQ. Who knows, we may get lucky…maybe Elvis will drop by (he’s not really dead).

PHCC Trade Show and Technical Seminar
The Tennessee Association of Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors will be featuring their annual trade show and convention on Thursday May 7th at the Knoxville Marriott in downtown Knoxville. This event will include a free buffet lunch, beginning at 11:00 a.m. for all attendees. On the convention floor will be over 30 exhibitors and their representatives, with hands-on examples of equipment, piping, materials, and information for attendees. Much of this will be worthwhile information for our consulting engineering community and Owners, and for the sales guys - hey, come check out the competition! This will be a great time to network, meet folks that are a part of the construction team, and generally gain knowledge in our profession.
In conjunction with the trade show, the East Tennessee Chapter of ASHRAE and the TAPHCC will be sponsoring a seminar entitled "Dynamic Ductwork: From Design to Installation." ASHRAE will feature Jack Hopkins, Applied Engineering and TAPHCC will feature Don Davis of Shoffner/Kalthoff as presenters. Jack will present some theory but mostly practical design information duct design, including low pressure duct and VAV duct, as well as duct used for fumes and material handling. Drafting and utilization of duct fittings will be discussed, with both Jack and Don discussing the balance between available space, air movement, friction drop, and cost. Finally Don will discuss fabrication and field installation of duct, using fabricated examples that will be passed around for hands-on inspection. This will be a great opportunity to include both designers and installers in a seminar that will hopefully prompt a lively discussion!
The seminar will start at 12:00 and end promptly at 1:00. RSVP's are not required, simply show up at the trade show! There will be pdh certificates available to attendees that request them. Afterwards will be a great time to take a walk through the trade show! Please consider participating in this event.

April Meeting - Student Presentation!
Our April meeting will feature a University of Tennessee senior design team consisting of ASHRAE Student members Ben Webb, Georgia White, and Trey Twickler, under the guidance of Dr. Bill Miller. The team recently submitted a proposal to the Department of Energy for the RACE to Zero international student design competition. The competition entailed the design of an energy efficient home utilizing novel design concepts in order to approach zero energy usage. The team has worked with a group of Architects to create a multi family dwelling using features such as an exterior insulation system and an exhaust heat pump. The team collaborated in conducting heating and cooling load calculations, conducting a cost-energy analysis with the use of BEopt, developing a photovoltaic system for energy production, and selecting HVAC equipment and home appliances. On the weekend of April 17th, the team will travel to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Denver, CO to formally present on the work conducted over the last several months.
The featured speaker for the presentation will be Georgia White, who is a team member on the project. She and Trey Twickler will be traveling to Denver soon after our chapter meeting to present and compete at NREL.
We will also get a student chapter update from Jeremy Miller.
Energy Codes Seminar: Registration Open!
Registration is now open for the joint seminar: 2012 Energy Codes in East Tennessee: What You Need to Know.
Join USGBC TN, AIA, AGC, ASHRAE, and ACEC for a half-day seminar to help identify how the 2012 codes are changing the industry, how these changes will affect liability, and how communities and industries can make these changes work for all stakeholders.
Recommended for: architects, engineers, contractors, code officials, and anyone interested in how energy codes impact the commercial building industry of East Tennessee.
The seminar will feature presentations by experts in compliance, enforcement, law, and culminate in a roundtable discussion with area stakeholders. Cost to attend is $25 per person (plus a small service charge). Public officials are admitted free. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Geothermal Seminar Opportunity!
Our good friend in the Tennessee Valley Chapter, John Richardson, has let us know of an upcoming seminar that they are sponsoring. The seminar is a ground source heat pump workshop, to be led by Steven Kavanaugh, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama. Despite his choice of higher learning, we have found Steven to be a great teacher, advocate, and very knowledgeable expert on this topic. We can highly recommend him.
So, if you are so inclined to take a Chattanooga Road Trip, check out the attached sign up sheet. Happy Trails!
ASHRAE 62: A Breath of Fresh Air!
Our March meeting will feature Mr. Dennis Stanke, ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member. In addition to being an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Dennis was a long-term member and Chair of the ASHRAE technical committee that developed Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. Dennis will be speaking on the Ventilation Rate Procedure, a multi-step process to calculate ventilation rates for individual spaces and zones within a building. This procedure raises ventilation rates by 20 to 80%, and more, over IMC 2006 values. As this procedure has been incorporated into the 2009 and later International Mechanical Codes, it is now a required task for code compliance in Knoxville, Knox County, and many other local jurisdictions.
Compliance with the ventilation rate procedure does allow the use of demand control ventilation however, so Dennis will also discuss DCV techniques which can help temper those increased values during times when occupancy varies.
The meeting will be Wednesday, March 18th, at 11:45. See our official notice here: http://www.etnashrae.org/march-meeting/
This meeting promises to be lively and we welcome discussion from those attending. Please consider inviting a guest!
March Student Chapter Meeting
On Tuesday evening, March 3, our own Walter Law spoke to the student chapter on the topic of Professional Engineering. Walter presented a brief presentation on the phases of design and construction, and supplemented that with various samples of construction documents, including ductwork, piping, and controls. He related some of the imperfections of the process, and offered discussion about several projects at the University of Tennessee that he has worked on.
The customary pizza dinner was enjoyed by all; approximately 10 - 12 people were in attendance, including the Chapter Advisor, Dr. Bill Miller.
STEM Academy Volunteers
This winter the ASHRAE Student Group at the University of Tennessee in partnership with the ASME Student Group have volunteered several times with the L&N STEM Academy (The science, technology, engineering, and math magnet school for Knox County Schools) to discuss engineering as a college degree and to do various experiments and competitions. Pictured are ASHRAE and ASME student members working with L&N STEM students on a mouse trap car race.
We look forward to continuing our relationship with the L&N STEM academy for many years to come, and hope to see some of the students become involved locally as a Professionals some day!!!
JIAMS Tour / YEA Event
On Wednesday January 21st the UTK ASHRAE Student group went on a tour of a yet-to-be opening facility on campus. The Joint Institute of Advanced Materials (JIAMS) is the new facility which has very complex mechanical systems needed for the research which will be undertaken in the facility. In addition to students, several YEA and local society members attended as well. All in all the event was a success and was able to show the students the impact ASHRAE has on a state of the art facility. We look forward to checking out more UTK buildings in the future!
February is Membership Month!
Due to the continued winter weather, and forecasted snow for Wednesday, we are going to postpone the February meeting until next Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Same time, place, and speaker! Please be safe as you return to work this week, and we look forward to a warm meeting next week.
ASHRAE is a strong and respected organization around the world, and that is a result of our strong membership. So, to commemorate that strength, February will be Membership Promotion Month for the East Tennessee Chapter of ASHRAE this year. We would like for you to bring a friend or coworker who you think would benefit and be interested in ASHRAE to our February meeting. For each prospective member that you bring, you will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of several prizes including VISA gift cards and limited edition East Tennessee ASHRAE coffee mugs. We look forward to seeing everyone at the February ASHRAE meeting!
Our meeting will be on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 11:45 at Rothchild's Catering. Come early and network with others!

Principal's Breakfast
On Friday, January 23, 8:00 am, our chapter leadership will be hosting a "Principal's Breakfast" for the consulting engineering community. We have parsed our membership list, and have invited at least one person from each firm represented in our membership list. If you manage to see this information and are part of a firm that does not receive an invitation, please contact Jack Hopkins (jhopkins@appeng.com) for inclusion to the event. The location will be the Gourmet's Market in Bearden, 5107 Kingston Pike. An omelet bar will be sponsored by the chapter.
Our goal for this event will be to listen to this sector of our membership and gain insight on how ASHRAE is doing as a local chapter and as a national Society. Are ASHRAE Standards helping you in your work? How is the energy code working for you? Do you like our speakers? How's the meat loaf?
Please come ready to let us know your thoughts. We have planned a limited agenda, with the idea that listening to input will be the main event.
Our leadership panel will consist of Jack Hopkins, chapter president; Nancy McBee, president-elect; and Jeff DeLong, treasurer and upcoming president-elect. Tom Werkema, ex Society Vice President, will also be present - Tom has great communication pathways to our national Society leadership. We hope that this input will help guide and improve our chapter during the coming years.
Please RSVP to Jack Hopkins via e-mail by Wednesday, January 21, to reserve your place at the breakfast. We will need to get an accurate count by that date to order food.
December is Research Month!
Our December meeting will be Research Promotion month, a time for us to recognize our major contributors. The past year was a very good year for research. We exceeded our goal by 14%, raising a total of $23,634.00. Our chapter took home the Full Circle, High Five, Challenge, and Chuck Koptis awards for our efforts. We had 42 contributors of over $200.00 each, with one member giving a grand total of $1,276.00. All of this can be attributed to the generosity of the chapter and to the diligence of the tireless calling committee.
The calling committee for the past year included John Sealy, Walter Law, Jon Driskill, David Kaminsky, Myron Carter, Phil Newby, and Andrew Meyers. They have all agreed to serve once again, and with the addition of Nancy McBee, this should be another banner year. When they call, please reach deep into your pockets and contribute generously.
50th Anniversary Gala
On November 13, 2014, the East Tennessee Chapter of ASHRAE celebrated our 50th Anniversary at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee. Over 115 members, special guests, and society officers were present, including ASHRAE Society President Tom Phoenix.
A number of chapter artifacts were on display, including original organizational documents, handbooks and technical manuals, and the very first edition of our chapter's newsletter - The Hillbilly Herald.
We were entertained during the social hour by Fredda Temples, who has played for our chapter on a number of occasions. The River Room was our gathering place prior to dinner and the program, and it served as a beautiful location.
We have had 48 chapter presidents over the last 50 years, and 23 of them were in attendance. A past presidents photograph was taken to commemorate the occasion.
A 25-minute video of our chapter history was presented during the program. Narrated by current historian Alan Hasemeyer, it included original documents, interviews, and many photographs of our members and past events.
The evening included a personal interview of charter member Wayne Rose, and concluded with several past presidents describing what ASHRAE has meant to their careers and professional lives.
