Chapter Member Larry Markel Nominated Society Director at Large

Good news from the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Orlando:  our own local member, Larry Markel has been nominated as a new Director at Large (DAL) for a three year term starting July 1st of this year.  We have been lucky to have several local candidates selected for various offices in the recent past including Dick Kelso as a DAL several years ago and Tom Werkema as Vice President – even though he was already VP before he came to this chapter.  All nominations were publicly announced at the Winter Meeting President’s Luncheon on Monday. Be sure and mark your ballot when it arrives!

Also our past Director and Regional Chair (DRC), Jeff Gatlin from Memphis was nominated as the alternate DAL in case one of the new members could not serve.

Congratulations to Larry!  He is a graduate of the Massachucetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and is a Principal of SRA International in Oak Ridge.

ASHRAE Learning Institute

If you have not already become aware, ASHRAE Society has a variety of ways that one can learn more on the topics of HVAC.

For those that can arrange to attend an out-of-town seminar, Society offers training in a variety of cities. Upcoming courses include HVAC Design Level I - Essentials and HVAC Design Level II - Applications. Locations are as close as Atlanta, and as remote as Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur. Try to get that one on your next expense report!

If that expense report gets kicked back, consider one of the ASHRAE Learning Institute's 2015 Fall Online Course Series. About a half-dozen different topics are being offered this fall on a variety of topics.

Summer YEA Event

Our first official 2015/16 chapter event was held on Thursday, August 20, at the Beer Market in Bearden. This was a joint event with young leadership members of several construction related organizations. Around 50 young professionals attended, with over 10 of our own members included. Also a few of our Univeristy of Tennessee Student Chapter members were present, needing a break after the first day of class!

This was a social event, allowing our young members to engage with others in the construction and design sectors. A fun time was had by all!

Thanks go out to Andrew Bosse for organizing this event!

Memphis CRC a Huge Success!

Congratulations to the East Tennessee Chapter of ASHRAE as we were by far the most awarded chapter at the recent Chapters Regional Conference held this July in Memphis, Tennessee. Our chapter finished in first place among all chapters in Region VII! We had eleven chapter members in attendance and those that made the journey were able to participate in business meetings, technical sessions, and workshops. That is, when they were not dining on Memphis Bar-B-Q! Rumor has it that an Elvis sighting occurred on Beale Street, but we've yet to make an official verification of that.

Awards that were given to our chapter include the following:

East Tennessee Chapter, Jack Hopkins, President

Presidential Award of Excellence, Star Award, Special Citation

CRC Registration Information

The following news comes from our friends Mike Bilderbeck and Jim Morgan, Memphis Chapter CRC Co-Chairs:

The 2015 Chapters Regional Conference (CRC) will be July 23-25 in Memphis, the home of FedEx, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Grizzlies, and the King of Rock and Roll (he’s not really dead, by the way).  We have a great event planned….and we’ll get some ASHRAE work done, too.

We’ll be staying at the newly renovated Sheraton Downtown; it’s connected to our Convention Center, a short trolley ride from Beale Street, and they’re charging us a really good rate.  The room rate is $130 per day, plus $18 per day valet parking.  The room block is open (it closes 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015) so go ahead and register for the hotel at:

https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=1412309721&key=4DA79C1

We’ve got some great events planned (schedule link here):

Golf on Wednesday afternoon at a good local course.  If you’re interested, contact Shawn Bodkin at stbodkin@trane.com (901-345-6000).

The Welcome Party will be at the Smithsonian-affiliated Rock and Soul Museum on Beale Street.  We’ll then eat at Blues City CafĂ© on Beale Street.

The Friday Banquet will start with a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum, then we’ll walk across the parking lot for a feast at Central BBQ.  Who knows, we may get lucky…maybe Elvis will drop by (he’s not really dead).

We’ll also have at least one good PDH Session planned:
•    Case Studies in Engineering Ethics led by Mike Bilderbeck
•    Technical Tour of the newly completed Bass Pro Shop at the Memphis Pyramid.  Don’t yawn…..it’s an amazing facility

So come and have a great time in Memphis; see old friends and make some new friends.

PHCC Trade Show and Technical Seminar

The Tennessee Association of Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors will be featuring their annual trade show and convention on Thursday May 7th at the Knoxville Marriott in downtown Knoxville. This event will include a free buffet lunch, beginning at 11:00 a.m. for all attendees. On the convention floor will be over 30 exhibitors and their representatives, with hands-on examples of equipment, piping, materials, and information for attendees. Much of this will be worthwhile information for our consulting engineering community and Owners, and for the sales guys - hey, come check out the competition! This will be a great time to network, meet folks that are a part of the construction team, and generally gain knowledge in our profession.

In conjunction with the trade show, the East Tennessee Chapter of ASHRAE and the TAPHCC will be sponsoring a seminar entitled "Dynamic Ductwork: From Design to Installation." ASHRAE will feature Jack Hopkins, Applied Engineering and TAPHCC will feature Don Davis of Shoffner/Kalthoff as presenters. Jack will present some theory but mostly practical design information duct design, including low pressure duct and VAV duct, as well as duct used for fumes and material handling. Drafting and utilization of duct fittings will be discussed, with both Jack and Don discussing the balance between available space, air movement, friction drop, and cost. Finally Don will discuss fabrication and field installation of duct, using fabricated examples that will be passed around for hands-on inspection. This will be a great opportunity to include both designers and installers in a seminar that will hopefully prompt a lively discussion!

The seminar will start at 12:00 and end promptly at 1:00. RSVP's are not required, simply show up at the trade show! There will be pdh certificates available to attendees that request them. Afterwards will be a great time to take a walk through the trade show! Please consider participating in this event.

Geothermal Seminar Opportunity!

Our good friend in the Tennessee Valley Chapter, John Richardson, has let us know of an upcoming seminar that they are sponsoring. The seminar is a ground source heat pump workshop, to be led by Steven Kavanaugh, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama. Despite his choice of higher learning, we have found Steven to be a great teacher, advocate, and very knowledgeable expert on this topic. We can highly recommend him.

So, if you are so inclined to take a Chattanooga Road Trip, check out the attached sign up sheet. Happy Trails!

ASHRAE 62: A Breath of Fresh Air!

Stanke.jpg

Our March meeting will feature Mr. Dennis Stanke, ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member. In addition to being an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Dennis was a long-term member and Chair of the ASHRAE technical committee that developed Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. Dennis will be speaking on the Ventilation Rate Procedure, a multi-step process to calculate ventilation rates for individual spaces and zones within a building. This procedure raises ventilation rates by 20 to 80%, and more, over IMC 2006 values. As this procedure has been incorporated into the 2009 and later International Mechanical Codes, it is now a required task for code compliance in Knoxville, Knox County, and many other local jurisdictions.

Compliance with the ventilation rate procedure does allow the use of demand control ventilation however, so Dennis will also discuss DCV techniques which can help temper those increased values during times when occupancy varies.

The meeting will be Wednesday, March 18th, at 11:45. See our official notice here: http://www.etnashrae.org/march-meeting/

This meeting promises to be lively and we welcome discussion from those attending. Please consider inviting a guest!
